I'm so so excited to share my newest quilt pattern!
The Flint Hills quilt is inspired by where we live (in the Flint Hills region of Kansas), and it is my take on a sunflower block. There are so many good sunflower quilt blocks out there already, but I wanted something that incorporated the leaves a little more (the purple fabrics in this version) and I love the end result!
Check out this blog post to see the original, very scrappy, sunflower quilt with green leaves and brown centers!
One of my favorite things about this pattern is the secondary design that shows up when the blocks are sewn together. I was originally going to make this with sashing between the blocks, but when I noticed the star, I immediately scrapped the sashing and tweaked the block bit to ensure some breathing space.
Flint Hills includes instructions for making a pillow, a baby quilt, a throw size (shown here) and a king size bed quilt. It is only written using yardage, but I do include tips at the end if you are wanting to make it scrappy like my original.
This is an intermediate skill level pattern. It is all traditionally pieced, but a consistent 1/4" seam is important. It does, however, incorporate several skills like strip piecing, flying geese, half square triangles, quarter square triangles, making it a great skill builder!
Fabric used: All fabrics are Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cottons. I used bright white, honey, butterscotch, beehive, plum, taffy, pretty in pink, and pink dogwood. I used the same fabric for the backing and binding which is Bee Plaids in Butterscotch. Also from Riley Blake Designs!
I was running a tad behind schedule when making the cover quilt, so I ran out of time to have it sent out for long arm quilting. I quilted it myself on my Janome doing a crosshatch grid with the lines spaced an inch apart. I had to make it even harder on myself by going on the diagonal, but it was so worth it. I love how it looks!
Thanks for all the love and excitement for this quilt over on Instagram! I'm thrilled to finally share the pattern with you!
