I'm so excited to finally say that I am a Riley Blake Designs fabric designer! I'm even more excited to introduce you to my first fabric collection, Under the Oaks.
Under the Oaks is inspired by the years my family spent living in Coastal Georgia. We were stationed at Fort Stewart, GA for about three years. Despite having lived in our third state since then, I keep going back to those memories when looking for fabric or pattern inspiration.
This first fabric collection has tiny nods to all of it!
There was a hurricane threat each year we lived in Georgia. The first year, the threat was heavy enough we had to evacuate. My neighbor, who I had only known for about 3 months at this point, invited us to join them at her family farm a few hours away. Luckily, there was no significant damage from that storm, and we were able to head home a few days later. But, that week away solidified our friendship and we jokingly called it our "hurrication" from then on.
Savannah, GA is about an hour away from Fort Stewart so it's an easy drive to get into the city for shopping or restaurant options. While we didn't spend much time in Savannah, I always seemed to end up at Forsyth Park when we did. The fountain at Forsyth Park is one of the most well known landmarks in Savannah. A fountain inspired print only made sense!
If you have followed me for any length of time, I have not stopped talking about the Spanish Moss in Georgia. I've tried for years to capture it in a traditional quilt pattern. Then, I made not one, but two, Spanish Moss quilts in my improv book. It was a no brainer to create a Spanish Moss fabric print. It is also the one I'm most proud of in this collection! Scrolling back through my photos from this era, I have countless pictures of the sunlight peeking through the trees and illuminating the Spanish moss.
One of my daughters was born while we were stationed at Fort Stewart, so I call her my Georgia peach. I couldn't make a Georgia inspired collection without including at least one peach. :)
I also designed one new quilt pattern to go with this collection. Meet, Sweet Orchard! I'll share more about this pattern when it releases, but I'll leave you with this sneak peek mocked up in the Under the Oaks fabrics!
